A House Divided
I try and not think of myself us one of the millions of individuals with a short attention span. Who get their information in easily digested sound bites. I like to think of myself as someone who looks hard at both sides of the coin. That being said, after a few minutes of hearing three “pundits” argue over which candidate got whose money. I had to turn the television off.
The media, our co-workers, and even our favorite crazy uncle all have an opinion. But the opinion that matters most should be the one inside you. Most of us just want one thing, the truth. I hear enough ear candy from car ads and “one call that’s all” people that I can stand. To allow myself to listen to individuals with dog whistles thinking I’m nothing more than an obedient lap dog… no.
Folks we are smarter than this, to allow two equally corrupt groups to throw promises at us like teenagers in love. I believe it’s time for all of us to take a more proactive look at what’s really being done. Because frankly, I believe there are some good points that both sides of the political spectrum bring up. So I believe the question should be, who are the policies coming out of Washington benefiting the most?
Over one hundred and fifty years ago, a wise man once said, “a house divided against itself cannot stand”. So why do me allow others to divide us up? Even the dumbest person can have a great idea every once-in-a-while. Why allow talking heads to tell us someone’s idea is wrong due to political allegiances? In a melting pot such as ours, there has to be some tolerance to different viewpoints. But to allow forces with their own agenda to divide us up because of some cultural norms, is allowing ourselves to play into their hands.
WE are Americans. WE gave ourselves the freedom to think, feel, and love the way we want too. To allow ourselves to be ruled over by just one fraction of the society isn’t how it’s supposed to be. So keep your eyes and ears open, watch for the dividers and listen for the dog whistlers. And have faith in the goodness of your neighbor.
