Catch & Release

For the past few weeks I've been spending some time working on my latest book project. The book is taking on an interesting feel. The direction I want to go is looking back at my youth and how those experiences have shaped my present life. I'm not a therapist, but I'm curious to see where my thoughts take the story.

Sharing my story has been a problem of mine for years. It hasn't been till recently that I'm able to open up to more than just a few people. For way too long I internalized everything, because for years I thought I would be embarrassed and ashamed to show my vulnerability to anyone. What I've learned is by telling my story; I'm actually releasing myself of the pain I experienced.

Holding on to the pain and regrets of life can create a pressure cooker within us. If you don’t give yourself a release for that pressure it builds and builds, until eventually it explodes. By giving yourself a relief valve you can take that internal pressure and release it. But problems can still come up if you choose the wrong type of pressure relief.

For a long time I thought I was releasing my pressure. But what I discovered was the pressure that I thought I was letting go wasn’t going anywhere. The relief valve I was using wasn’t the right one for me. It wasn’t until I learned to express my feelings openly that relief finally came.

Now my methods of relieving pressure may not be your way of relieving pressure. Yours may be more physical activity than mine. Or your way may be more spiritual in nature than mine. The point is carrying the weight of the world does none of us any good. Rather through words, activity, prayer, or by any positive means; we all need a release from the pressures of life.
